Periododontics

IMPLANT PLACEMENT

Periodontitis is an inflammation that develops in the tissues that support the teeth, i.e. the gums and the bone. It usually develops as a progression of gingivitis.

Whether the disease will be caused and to what extent, depends on the immune system and the dental care of the patient.

Initially, the treatment includes a cleaning by the dentist and oral hygiene instructions for proper brushing.

When the periodontitis has progressed, a deeper cleaning is needed. This includes root scrapings, that is, removing the microbes that are under the gums and on the surface of the root with special tools and under local anesthesia.

On a second level, in the event that the conservative treatment up to now has not yielded as expected, surgical treatment will be needed. The dentist “opens” the gums to remove the germs. Also, more rarely, the specialist can “build” the bone again – to the extent of course that this is possible.

It is very important that the patient remains consistent on the schedule of regular call-backs and check-ups.

AESTHETIC GUM PLASTIC

Gum plastic is the technique that corrects the shape of the gum line. It is mainly applied when there is a gummy smile and a visible asymmetry in the shape of the gums.

ROOT COVERAGE TECHNIQUES

Root coverage is a plastic surgery procedure, carried out when there is an aesthetic problem, hypersensitivity to cold, root caries, difficulty in applying any oral hygiene routine and under conditions, after the treatment of periodontitis or any other treatment.

Based on our experience and on the needs of the patient, we choose different techniques that include the use of gum grafts from the palate or biomaterials that are placed in the gum area and gradually assimilate with the adjacent tissues. An alternative to gum grafts is the occlusally displaced flap, i.e. the displacement of the gums towards the molar of the tooth, mainly in the upper jaw.

All Periodontology treatments are performed by our specialist Periodontist Stamatios Kioufis.
